Better English pronunciation to make things better!

次の２つのセンテンスを発音してみてください：
● Yes, I would.
● She’s a kind woman.
このような発音になっていませんか？↓

テレビドラマや舞台などでとてもきれいな発音で英語の台詞をこなしている俳優さんたちの中にも、この点で残念な結果になってしまっているケースが頻繁にあります。同様に英語で歌う歌手の方の中にも、ここが非常に大きな欠点となっているケースが多いです。問題は ‘would’ と ‘woman’ の発音にあります。正しい発音は次のようになります。↓

日本人は /wʊ/ や /wu:/ の音の繋がりがとても苦手です。実はかなり英語力がある人でも上記のような単語を発音するときに /w/ の音をきちんと出せない人が多いようです。/ʊ/ や /u:/ といった母音の前でもきちんと /w/ を発音しましょう。

まず単語で練習してみましょう。↓

wood /wʊd/、would /wʊd/、woman /ˈwʊmən/、wool /wʊl/、woo /wu:/ ↓

次はセンテンスです。↓

● What would you like to eat for lunch?
● I would like to have a wooden chair.
● This computer would woo young people if it were a bit cheaper.

さて、こんどは有名な言葉遊びで /w-/ の練習をしてみましょう。↓

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck
if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
He would chuck, he would, as much as he could,
and chuck as much wood as a woodchuck would
if a woodchuck could chuck wood.

In Japanese, there is no phonemic sequence /wu/. So, probably in this analogy, many Japanese learners of English can’t pronounce words like wood, wool, woman, and woo correctly. Instead, they tend to pronounce them [ɯd]*, [ɯ:l]*, [ˈɯ:man]*, and [ɯ:]* respectively. So, they should learn to be able to pronounce the English phonemic sequences /wʊ/ and /wu:/ by repeating them over and over again.
