さて、今回は久しぶりにリズムの練習をしてみたいと思います。
＜スピーチ速度と文強勢の関係＞
Sentence を発音するときに、その中でいくつの音節に強勢が置かれるかは、さまざまな要素が絡み合っていますが、主にスピーチの速度と関係します。一般的に、スピーチの速度が増すと文強勢の数が減少する傾向があります。これは英語のように強勢（stress）のある音節でタイミングをとる stress-timed language の特徴です。以下の例文で実演してみます。（General British で発音します。）↓
Slower → I read about a three-day package tour to Kyoto. Fifty five thousand yen, all inclusive, sounds quite reasonable, doesn’t it?（文強勢15個）
Faster → I read about a three-day package tour to Kyoto. Fifty five thousand yen, all inclusive, sounds quite reasonable, doesn’t it?（文強勢10個）
では、いくつかの sentence でリズム練習をしてみましょう。ここでは速く発音することを想定して文強勢の数は少なめにしてあります。（General British で発音します。）↓

＜人称代名詞＞
日本人の英語発音のクセのひとつに、人称代名詞に非常に強いアクセントをつける傾向があります。これは、ネイティブが聴いていてとても不自然に感ずることがあります。以下の２つのセンテンスで日本人のクセを実演してみます。↓
When he* went to the cinema, he* ran into his old friend.
As you* become more clear about it, you* will be able to decide what is best for you.
文脈によって上の “he” や “you” を強調する必要が無いかぎり、これらにアクセントをつけて発音するすることはありません。それでは、英語らしい強勢とアクセントで発音してみます。↓
When he went to the cinema, he ran into his old friend.

今回は、1970年代に男性化粧品「MANDOM」のテーマソングとして大ヒットした “Lovers Of The World” を歌ってみましたのでアップします。歌詞の中の “There is someone who’s waiting for you” の “who’s” /huːz/ は weak form で /h/ を脱落させて前の語 “someone” とリンクして /sʌmwʌnuz/ と発音しています。
