Better English pronunciation to make things better!

2011年になりました。本年もT-ACT英語発音矯正サービスをよろしくお願いいたします。
さて、元旦早々から母音の発音練習をしてみたいと思います。今回は Received Pronunciation (RP) の母音のなかから /æ/, /ʌ/, /ɑː/, /ɜː/, /ə/ を練習します。
RP の母音の中でこの５つの母音は日本語では音質の点ですべて /a/ の音素に属してしまうために区別しにくいようです。外国語の発音を練習するときには、日本語の音にマッチングさせようとする癖を捨て去り、聴いたままの音を真似る習慣を身につけることが最も大切なことです。

/ə/
この母音は強勢の無い音節にしか現れない母音で、通称 Schwa としてよく知られています。音質は /ɜː/ と同じと考えてよいですが、RP やその他の non-rhotic accent では、語尾にこと音がくる open syllable ではやや open に発音されます。

English is the most successful language in the history of the world. But Nicholas Ostler, a scholar of the rise and fall of languages, makes a surprising prediction in his latest book: the days of English as the world’s lingua franca may be numbered. … English is expanding as a lingua franca but not as a mother tongue. More than 1 billion people speak English worldwide but only about 330m of them as a first language, and this population is not spreading. The future of English is in the hands of countries outside the core Anglophone group. Will they always learn English?
