Better English pronunciation to make things better!

/n/、/t/、/d/ や /l/ の次に Dental fricatives (/θ, ð/) を続けて発音するのが難しい、と言う生徒さんが多いので、今回はこれを練習してみたいと思います。まず、上の４つの発音してみます。↓

以前に dental fricatives /θ, ð/ の発音の仕方について説明しましたが、前に来る音によっては、/θ, ð/ が発音しにくい場合があるようです。 /n/、/t/、/d/ や /l/ の後に区切らずに /θ, ð/ を発音するとき、/θ, ð/ になめらかに移行できるよう、前の子音の段階ですでに舌先は上の前歯の裏側に接触します。このように、隣接している音にさまざまに調音が影響されたり、次の音に移行しやすいよう準備しながら調音するプロセスを coarticulation といいます。Dental fricatives /θ, ð/ の特徴はなんといっても舌先と上の前歯が調音点であることですから、/n/、/t/、/d/、 /l/ の段階ですでに舌先がの前歯の裏側に接触 (dentalised) する訳です。この流れがスムーズに出来るようになれば、/θ, ð/ は楽に発音できるようになります。

今回は “Stranger In The Crowd” という素敵な曲を歌ってみたのでここにアップします。カムバック後の Elvis の曲のなかでも大好きなナンバーです。この曲はアルバム That’s The Way It Is に収められていますが、おちろんライブでも歌っていました。残念ながら今回はカラオケが入手できなかったので、自作の伴奏に歌入れをしてみました。
歌詞に /n+ð/、/nd+ð/、/t+ð/、/l+ð/ の音の並びが数多く出てきます。今回の練習にちょうど良いと思われます。
