英語の破裂音 /p, t, k, b, d, g/ が語尾または音節末にあるとき、開放（release）にはさまざまなパターンがあります。そのなかでも頻繁に起こるのが、開放が聞こえになくなるパターン（inaudible release）です。理由としては、開放がとても弱く行われるために聞こえにくくなったり、ポーズの前にある場合に完全に無開放になったり、同化（assimilation）や同時調音（coarticulation）のために聞こえなくなったり、その音自体が脱落してしまったり等、さまざまです。また、/t/ の場合には声門閉鎖音（glottal stop [ʔ]）によって代用される場合もあります。
では、まず単語で実践してみます。それぞれ、語尾の破裂音を最初は開放をきちんと行い、つぎに聞こえにくい開放で発音してみます。

In Japan there is a kind of undeclared language war. As you may have guessed, it’s between British and American English. Of course being British myself, I feel there is only ONE kind of English and that MUST come from England! Naturally, American teachers think differently.
Of course, the two versions of the English language must sometimes be very difficult for Japanese students. One year students may have a British teacher who tells them ‘a flat’ is a place where you live. The next year, if they have an American teacher, she may say, “No, that’s wrong. You live in an apartment not a flat. A flat means that you have no air in your tire.”
