Better English pronunciation to make things better!

英語では、長母音と短母音という区別はあまり適切ではありません。長母音であっても実際には非常に短く発音される場合もあり、また逆に短母音であってもかなり長めに発音される場合があります。
たとえば、次のそれぞれの単語のペアは同じ母音を持っていますが、左側の単語の母音のほうが右側の単語の母音よりも短く発音されます。聴き比べてみてください。↓

seat /siːt/ — seed /siːd/、leaf /liːf/ — leaves /liːvz/、
loose /luːs/ — lose /luːz/、 piece /piːs/ — peas /piːz/、
set /set/ — said /sed/、wet /wet/ — wed /wed/、
cap /kæp/ — cab /kæb/、pick /pɪk/ — pig /pɪg/

英語では、同じ音節内で母音は次に無声音の子音があると短く発音され、それ以外の場合は少し長めに発音される傾向があります。これは二重母音（diphthongs）についても同じです。↓

right /raɪt/ — ride /raɪd/、sight /saɪt/ — side /saɪd/、
mate /meɪt/ — made /meɪd/、wrote /wəʊt/ — road /rəʊd/

さらにセンテンスになると、強勢やアクセントの関係でさらに母音の長さは様々に変化します。（これについては次回説明します。）

さて、ここで重要になるのが母音の音色（quality）です。同じ母音がさまざまに長さが変化しても、その音色は変化させないように発音することが大切になってきます。たとえば、meat /miːt/ と mid /mɪd/ を比べてみると、実際には後者の母音のほうが前者よりも長く発音される場合が多いのです。しかし、大切なのはそれぞれの母音（/iː/ と /ɪ/）の音色の違いです。母音の長さがさまざまに変化する英語では、母音の音色が似通った語を聞き分けるカギになります。次の単語ペアで実践しますので聴いてみてください。↓

meat /miːt/ — mid /mɪd/、beat /biːt/ — bid /bɪd/、
leaf /liːf/ — live /lɪv/、peak /piːk/ — pig /pɪg/

今回は Elvis の初期のナンバーから “Wear My Ring Around Your Neck” を歌ってみました。軽快なロックンロールです！ 歌になると、メロディやリズムの関係で母音はスピーチの場合とは異なるパターンで長くなったり短くなったりします。でもポイントは同じく、母音の音色です。
