“can’t”, “glass”, “bath” などの発音 — RP の /ɑː/ と GA の /æ/

4th/02/2010

Today’s my singing
今回私が歌ってみたのは “After Loving You” というブルース調のバラードです。ブルース、ジャズ、ロック、ポップスなどの曲を歌う場合は、通常アメリカ発音で歌うのがお決まりになっています。今回特集している母音(該当する音節を太字で示してあります)についても、この理由からすべて /æ/ で発音されます。簡単な曲ですので一緒に歌ってみてください。↓

But now after loving you, what else is there to do
For honey, all the rest is just gonna have to be second best
I know I’ll go through life comparing her to you
That’s cause I’m no good, I’m no good to anyone after loving you

Your precious love cannot be erased
By just another woman with a pretty face
And your memory, you know it will remain
For it cannot be erased

Other loves may come along
They can’t live up to you
That’s cause I’m no good, I’m no good to anyone after loving you

Received Pronunciation (RP) and General American (GA) have different vowel systems. The so-called “BATH lexical set” presents a well-known example of the difference between the two accents. Thus, words like bath, glass, fast and castle are pronounced with /æ/ by the speaker of GA, whereas they are pronounced with /ɑː/ by speakers of RP (or General British). It is advisable that Japanese EFL learners have a basic understanding of the vowels systems of these two major accents.

The song I’ve sung and posted here today is called “After Loving You”. In the lyrics written down above, can’t and the first syllable of after are boldfaced. Since the song is supposed to be sung with an American accent, can’t and after should be pronounced with /æ/, i.e. /kænt/ and /ˈæftər/, even if you’re a speaker of British English.
