Better English pronunciation to make things better!

英語では母音の長さは前後の音の環境やリズムの関係でさまざまに変化します。ですから、長い母音（[ː] で示されている母音）であっても非常に短く発音される場合があり、また反対に、短い母音と言われるものがかなり長く発音される場合もあります。今回は純母音（pure vowel）の /iː/ と /ɪ/ の練習をしますが、この２つの母音も、大切なのはその長さよりもむしろ音色の違いであることに注目しましょう。
ポイントとしては、/iː/ は非常に close の位置で発音される緊張母音で、その一方 /ɪ/ は /iː/ ほど close ではなく少し弛んだ音色になります。
[iː] と [ɪ] を発音してみます：

これを単語で実践してみます。二つの母音の音色に注意しながらリピートしましょう：

beat /biːt/ – bit /bɪt/、seat /siːt/ – sit /sɪt/、leave /liːv/ – live /lɪv/、
weak /wiːk/、cheet /tʃiːt/、dream /driːm/、treat /triːt/、
with /wɪð/，six /sɪks/、brick /brɪk/、trick /trɪk/、
repeat /rɪˈpiːt/、defeat /dɪˈfiːt/、beating /ˈbiːtɪŋ/、seeing /ˈsiːɪŋ/

今日は “Twenty Days And Twenty Nights” というバラードを歌って録音してみたのでアップします。今回はとくに /ɪ/ で発音すべき箇所を選んで太字で示しました。me、she、be などといった単語の母音は、いわゆる強形（strong form）の /iː/ で発音する場合と弱形（weak form）の /ɪ/ で発音する場合があるので太字にはしてありません。

The length of an English vowel varies considerably depending on the phonetic environment. Thus a long vowel can be so shortened that it may be of about the same length as, or even longer than, a short vowel. So /iː/ and /ɪ/, for example, are distinguished not so much by quantity as by quality.

The song I’ve sung and uploaded here is called “Twenty Days And Twenty Nights”, originally sung by Elvis Presley for his album That’s The Way It Is (1970). The boldfaced letters in the lyrics indicates that they should be pronounced /ɪ/.
