Better English pronunciation to make things better!

今回は英語の二重母音（diphthong）の練習です。その中でも ‘go’ や ‘know’ で発音される二重母音は、地域によって音色がさまざまです。General British と General American を例にとっても、その音色は違います。‘go’ を聴き比べてみてください：

General British /gəʊ/ — General American /goʊ/
（ただし、General American であっても、特に女性は /əʊ/ に近い音色で発音する場合が多いようです。）

まずはいつものように単語で練習してみましょう。それぞれの単語を初めに General British、次に General American で発音してみます。それぞれの音声表記を £ マークと $ マークで分けてあります：

so (£/səʊ/, $/soʊ/)、know (£/nəʊ/, $/noʊ/)、blow (£/bləʊ/, $/bloʊ/)、
coat (£/kəʊt/, $/koʊt/)、focus (£/ˈfəʊkəs/, $/ˈfoʊkəs/)、
throat (£/θrəʊt/, $/θroʊt/)、suppose (£/səˈpəʊz/, $/səˈpoʊz/)、
growing (£/ˈgrəʊɪŋ/, $/ˈgroʊɪŋ/)、although (£/ɔːlˈðəʊ/, $/ɔːlˈðoʊ/)

次はセンテンスで練習します。それぞれのセンテンスを初めに General British、次に General American で発音してみます。全体のリズムにも注意しながら発音しましょう：

● You’re supposed to know about it.
● When did she go home?
● A growing number of experts say that active lifestyle should be promoted.
● The reason why he was dressed in black from head to toe is totally mysterious to me.

今回は少し頑張ってダイアローグでの練習もやってみましょう。会話の内容を考えながら音読してみましょう。イギリス人の Peter (P) とアメリカ人の Bob (B) という設定で音読します。発音の違いに注意しながら練習してみましょう。なお、ダイアローグは David Albery著 (2008) Language Leader Teacher’s Book: Upper Intermediate (Longman出版) からのものに修正を加えて使用しています。↓

P: So Bob, do you think you’ll renew your membership? I was just looking at the programme for next year.
B: I’m not sure really. I didn’t get to see as many exhibitions as I’d hoped to last year. I only went to a couple. I saw the Matisse exhibition. It was fantastic—so inspiring. (Matisse /mæˈtiːs/)
P: I didn’t get to see that. I’m not really into that sort of thing but I heard it was something special, though. I also heard the Monet one was excellent, but I didn’t see it. (Monet £/ˈmɒneɪ/ $/moʊˈneɪ/)
B: No, neither did I. The only other one I got to was the Pop Art one. Did you see it?
P: No, I didn’t, actually.
B: Well, you didn’t miss much at all. It wasn’t worth the effort, or the entrance fee for that matter.
P: Oh, the Rembrandt exhibition at the start of the year was excellent, although it was really packed. (Rembrandt /ˈrembrænt/)
B: Mmm. The thing is: the membership is expensive if you don’t go to most of the exhibitions. So, how about it, then. Are you going to rejoin, or what?
P: I don’t know. Hard to decide, isn’t it?

今回は “Suppose” というとても美しいバラードを歌って録音してみました。この曲は ‘Suppose…’ というラインが連続しており、今回の二重母音の練習に絶好の曲だと思います。いくつかの理由から、ポップスやロック（ブリティッシュ・ロックは除く）はアメリカ発音で歌うのがお決まりになっているので、この歌も今回の二重母音は General American の /oʊ/ で歌いました。/oʊ/ で発音する箇所は、その音節を太字で示してあります。このブログで何度か書きましたが、英語で歌を歌うのであれば、こうしたバラードを正確な発音で、しかもさり気なく歌えるようになることがとても重要なポイントです。ぜひ一緒に歌ってみてください。
