General British & General American (1) — ‘t’ の発音

9th/07/2009

General American ↓

In General American (GA or GenAm), an intervocalic ‘t’ is usually a slightly voiced, tap-like sound in which the tongue tip strikes the alveolar ridge once and quickly moves away from it. The duration of the actual contact between the tongue tip and the alveolar ridge is very short, compared to General British (GB) where the contact is firmer and longer. Together with the difference in vowel quality between GB and GA and the fact that GA is rhotic (i.e. r-pronouncing) while GB is non-rhotic, the difference in the pronunciation of intervocalic ‘t’ is also an important point to remember.
